Raise a friends, family, and fools round after an accelerator rejection
Raise a round from potential investors you invite.
An accelerator turned me down. What should I do now?
You have four paths after an accelerator rejection. You can apply again for a later cohort. You can try another program. You can keep building on your own money. You can also raise a round on Fools from potential investors you invite.
What a Fools round gets you
Fools lets you run a friends, family, and fools round under Regulation Crowdfunding. Investors in the round receive a Crowd SAFE.
Each Crowd SAFE is a right to future equity in your company. The capital can arrive before institutions are ready to invest. A funded round is something to show when you apply again or pitch a seed.
You write your own pitch and set your terms. Our licensed broker-dealer partner holds investors' money. It moves only if your round hits its target by its deadline.
Accelerator deals vary. Each program sets its own terms and decides who it accepts. A Fools round promises no outcome.
Can I raise from friends and family without a VC?
Yes. Under Regulation Crowdfunding, accredited and non-accredited investors can invest in your startup through a registered funding portal or broker-dealer. Non-accredited investors have a yearly limit. On Fools, each investor in your round receives a Crowd SAFE.
The SEC's guide for Regulation Crowdfunding issuers sets out the rules.
Can I apply to an accelerator while raising on Fools?
Yes. You can apply while a round is open. Each program decides who it accepts and how it weighs a prior round. If the program's deal carries a most favored nation clause, check when it starts and what it covers.
A 90-day plan after an accelerator rejection
Days 1 to 30
List the potential investors you will invite. Set your terms. Launch your round on Fools and file your Form C before investors commit.
Days 31 to 60
Invite your potential investors. Close the round by its deadline.
Days 61 to 90
Use the money to build traction. Decide whether to apply again.
A closed round is progress you can show in your next application. It shows that investors committed money to your company. Count it as funding raised. Keep it out of your revenue figures.
The six-step playbook after a rejection walks through each step.
How a Fools round compares with other options
| Option | Who invests | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Fools | Accredited and non-accredited investors you invite, on Crowd SAFEs under Regulation Crowdfunding | Rounds up to the $5M legal limit through our licensed broker-dealer partner |
| Wefunder, StartEngine, Republic | The public, through Regulation Crowdfunding | StartEngine lists over 760,000 prospective investors in its community. |
| Do-it-yourself SAFE | Usually accredited investors | Non-accredited friends who invest outside an exemption create securities risk. |
| Honeycomb Credit | Customers and community, through Regulation Crowdfunding | Mostly loans that pay interest |
